Amid the scorching heat, I attended a video conference of the Global Rental Alliance at the headquarters of the Japan Construction Equipment Rental Association.
The topic was how digital intelligence (AIoT: Artificial Intelligence + Internet of Things) will transform rental operations.

Based on presentations from various countries (Japan, France, the Netherlands, the UK, Australia, Canada, etc.), AIoT will bring the following transformations to construction equipment rental operations:
1. Full life-cycle visualization management of equipment
2. Predictive maintenance, remote diagnostics, and repair support
3. Autonomous equipment scheduling and intelligent work support
4. Refined asset pricing and risk management
5. Digitalized customer services
6. Reshaping efficiency, costs, and business models (such as usage-based charging).

On behalf of the Japan Construction Equipment Rental Association, I delivered a special research report on points (1) and (2), as well as their impact leading to (6), with concrete case studies.

Through participating in the meeting, I recognized that AIoT would drive the following transformations in the rental industry:
1. Customers: Shift from “using equipment + services” to “obtaining comprehensive construction-site solutions and integrated services.” Construction efficiency will improve significantly, and the value experience will become more holistic.
2. Manufacturers: Transform from “product manufacturers” to “providers of comprehensive solutions and integrated service platforms for products and construction scenarios.” This enables a dual engine of product + service, expands the full life-cycle value chain of equipment, and accelerates the shift toward becoming Comprehensive Solution Providers.
3. Rental Companies: Upgrade from “equipment suppliers and maintenance service providers” to “integrated construction-site service providers offering intelligent equipment, systems, and operations.” This deepens their value partnership with customers, improves asset efficiency, reduces operating costs, and transforms profit models to support sustainable development.
